Equity-based pedagogieshave posited alternate ways to creating learning environments where Black students excel academically and sociallyThese equity-based pedagogies use counter-narratives as one way to contradict deficit theories and advance frameworks, principles, and theories which practitioners can adapt and emulate in order to increase Black student achievement. Although the equity pedagogies offer clear expectations and suggestions to teachers for working with communities and families; most of the pedagogical frameworks are mostly teacher centered. Consequently, teachers are the actors, negotiators, and coordinators of connecting families with the school. Still, these equity-based pedagogies offer a useful framework for understanding how Black families in K-12 urban schools can advocate for their students while actively resisting barriers to Black family involvement.
