There have been recent calls from within the field of teacher education to identify “the components of building and maintaining productive relationships with students” (Grossman & McDonald, 2008, p. 188). Although research in mathematics education illuminates the efficaciousness of developing strong relationships with students, how mathematics teachers establish caring relationships with their students has been underspecified. This study describes an integrated caring approach to elementary mathematics practice and examines how this pedagogical approach influences student experiences. Knowing more about the relational demands of mathematics teaching may provide insight into how pedagogical relationships influence student mathematical experiences and learning, particularly among students from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds.
