Thu, April 3, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

ABSTRACT:
Large urban communities face difficult challenges in allowing sufficient time to fully implement evidence-based school reform models to show improvements and close achievement gaps. Indeed, school models have been developed and implemented within traditional public school systems nationally, regionally and locally as laboratories of innovation. This case study examines the implementation of one such model partnering with the Newark Public School District (NPS), namely, BRICK Avon Academy. The purpose of this mixed methods case study is to describe the model’s implementation over three years and examine processes and outcomes of turnaround. Interviews provide various perspectives of key stakeholders. Data is disaggregated to track student level outcomes. Positive achievement outcomes, lessons learned, challenges, best practices and recommendations are presented
