Dyslexia, Well-Being, and a Specialized Learning Setting

Sun, April 6, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Dyslexia is a common learning difference impacting an individual’s ability to read and write. Many individuals with dyslexia struggle in school settings to achieve academically and this struggle often transforms into psychological distress. In order to accommodate to the challenges experienced by dyslexic learners, specialized learning programs (e.g. camps, schools) have been created. In addition to the academic needs, these programs aim to improve how students related to themselves and others. The present mixed methods study examines the impact of one such program on the well-being of participants. The results promise to expand understanding of how the experience of dyslexia impacts emotional health, as well as explore how a specialized learning setting affects students with dyslexia.
