(En)Gendering Reform, (E)Racing Justice: Gender, Race, Abjection, and Schooling

Fri, April 4, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, 203A

Abstract

The field of education is often in a perpetual state of reform. Nevertheless, these reforms can have a significant impact on the lives of students, teachers, and communities. This paper explores the various narratives surrounding the “teacher” and reform, linking historical and contemporary narratives about teachers. The author utilizes feminist lens of intersectionality and abjection to analyze the data. The author argues the field of education is a racio-gendered institution which deploys and maintains racist-patriarchal regimes of truth that produce the retrenchment of economic benefits for women, particularly those of color, in the perpetuation of a neoliberal order.
