Hmong American Students at Selective Public Universities: Exploring Sources of Support

Fri, April 4, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This study explores the support mechanisms and networks of Hmong American university students in order to contribute to the literature by 1) adding to the growing body of work that provides disaggregated accounts of AAPI students’ higher education experiences, and 2) intervening into dominant understandings of AAPIs that has rendered invisible Hmong American college matriculates. Findings indicate that Hmong students turn to family, college peers and cultural organizations, and culturally sensitive support services for a variety of emotional and social support in the college process; however several students did not have any supportive networks. Implications for policy and practice are discussed.
