Student Learning Objectives: History and Current Policy Directions

Abstract

The first presentation will focus on the history of SLOs, particularly as they relate to teacher evaluation. By setting a context for how SLOs came to be part of the teacher evaluation milieu and the various forms they have taken in different states and districts around the country, the presentation will illuminate the policy dynamics related to SLO implementation with a particular focus on teachers in grades and subject areas without suitable state assessment data. Best practices for SLO policy guidelines at the state and district level will be discussed, including the structure of SLOs, quality assurance, comparability, and inclusion in an overall rating system.
