This study summarizes trends in national, large-scale research studies and discusses how current practices can be enhanced to promote best-practice research regarding black male achievement. Specifically, limitations associated with widespread trends to compare average differences between mainstream and marginalized groups are described. Thereafter, using national data on high-achieving black males, the author will demonstrate how alternative research designs can be used to inform best-practice research. Findings can be used to inform future achievement research for black males and other underrepresented groups.
