This paper examines the value of cogenerative dialoguing sessions in the teaching and learning of mathematics in a second grade classroom. Participants include a university supervisor, a second grade teacher/doctoral candidate, two practicum students, and twenty-two second graders. This paper calls for a closer examination of the voices and ideas of our youngest stakeholders when preparing pre-service teachers and while conducting educational research in general with the goal of ultimately answering the following question: Do our perceptions of the effectiveness of our lessons, as educators, match what the students actually think?
