Legitimate Peripheral Technology: When Youth Act to Disrupt Social Patterns

Mon, April 7, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 113A

Abstract

When do youth use learning as a key to access participation rights? This question invokes power, place, knowledge, and social action. My goal in asking it is to investigate learning as a humanizing process—that is, when is learning a means of inclusion and participation? Learning as period of development has also been used to delay or deny participation. I will discuss my work with youth taking on new participatory roles where these social patterns were at play. I will look at their approaches to using available technologies—broadly defined—to simultaneously organize the conditions for their learning and their community participation.
