Assessment of Racial-Minority Students

Sun, April 6, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 113A

Abstract

In 1999 I served as the editor of a special issue of the Journal of Negro Education that focused on "Assessment in the context of culture in pedagogy" that brought together key educational researchers of color who had been leading the investigation into the use of culturally responsive pedagogy (Gloria Ladson-Billings and Carole Lee) and others who were addressing the reasonableness of developing culturally responsive/specific assessment approaches (Gwyneth Boodoo, Richard Duran, Audrey Qualls, and myself). In this session, I summarize what has been learned since this special issue, providing a preliminary review and reflection on selected research and scholarly work in the assessment of racial minority students.
