Assessing Skills Used in Social Interaction

Sat, April 5, 8:15 to 10:15am, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, 201C

Abstract

Children’s ability to engage in successful social interaction requires several related skills that are coordinated and flexibly applied. Those skills include the ability to read others’ emotions, take others’ perspectives, solve social problems, and self-regulate. This presentation describes SELweb, a web-based system for assessing children’s social-emotional comprehension and social acceptance in Kindergarten through third grade. The presentation will first describe evidence of the reliability and validity of SELweb. The presentation will then describe ways educators can use SELweb to guide them as they teach the skills children need to successfully work together, develop and maintain friendships, and earn positive peer regard.
