Legal Milestones Regarding Language and Education for African American Students

Abstract

This presentation will survey some of the legal cases and corresponding policies that have been targeted at African American students. In addition, the misuse of speech pathology diagnostics pertaining to the educational placement of African American students into remedial education classes will be discussed, along with corresponding policy implications that are intended to promote greater fluency with academic varieties of English while safeguarding the linguistic human rights of all students in United States schools.
