Rethinking Innovative Research in Teacher Education for High-Poverty Schools in Brazil

Sun, April 6, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 119A

Abstract

This presenter will discuss the efforts of one university serving the Valparaiso region of Chile to improve its infrastructure and capacity in a teacher education program, and particularly in its linkages with public schools. Social segregation in Chile´s education system has led to high concentrations of children poverty attending the public schools, which, in contrast to the private schools, do not select pupils. A recent self-study of the university’s fourteen teacher education programs demonstrated a general lack of attention to the public schools and to issues of poverty. The presenter will discuss how the university received grant money to transform its program. This presentation will focus on its work to collaborate with local public schools in order to prepare its teachers to work effectively with children in poverty.
