If Elephants Could Talk: Exploring the Emotional Jungle of Racial Literacy in Schools

Sat, April 5, 6:30 to 8:30pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 113B

Abstract

Schools are places where racial conflicts remain hidden at the expense of a healthy school climate and the well-being of students of color. Most schools fail to act on racial micro-aggressions because the stress of negotiating such conflicts is extremely high. The framing of racial literacy as the learning of strategies necessary to read, recast, and resolve racially stressful encounters is the focus of this talk.
