Abstract

Digital badges are web-enabled tokens of accomplishment. Unlike grades, certificates, and transcripts, badges can contain specific claims and links to detailed evidence supporting those claim. Earners can readily share badges over social networks and annotate & display them in a digital “backpack” that they control. New research is showing that badge issuers are transformed by deciding what to information to include in badges, and that learners are transformed by deciding what badges to seek and how to display them. This gives badges unprecedented potential for educational research. This interactive workshop will feature leading innovators who are breaking new ground in badge research. This includes summative research of badge impact, formative research for badge practices, and transformative research with badges in larger educational ecosystems.
