Telling Their Stories: Conducting and Reporting Research in African American Communities

Abstract

The discussion will focus on methodological considerations that researchers should address when conducting research on African Americans in various contexts (urban, rural, suburban), designing the research to give ³voice² to the participants, and strategies for telling their stories. The discussion will draw on previous conceptual work as well as empirical work using qualitative methods (research on parents, teachers, and principals) and how this work could and should contribute to theory and practice.
