40 Shades of Greening – Comparing Experiences of Infusing Sustainability within Higher Education Institutions in Ireland and The Middle East

Abstract

Over the past ten years, Dublin City University (DCU) has engaged in a significant number of sustainability-related research projects, networks and initiatives with the dual focus of building capacity in Education for Sustainability (EfS), and becoming a more sustainable organization in the process. As a result, DCU is now regularly called upon to share experiences of good practice in EfS. One recent engagement involved participation in the promotion and infusion of EfS in six universities across Egypt, Lebanon and Jordan. The discussion that ensues outlines ‘40 shades’ of the greening process, by comparing and contrasting the on-going process of reorienting policies, practices and curricula towards sustainability within DCU, and higher education institutions in the Middle East.
