Reframing the Emotional Life of Children and Adults in Early Childhood Spaces

Abstract

The paper session will consist of three empirical and/or conceptual papers. The first paper will provide a historical analysis concerning how emotions have been viewed in early childhood classrooms followed by a reframing of emotion, grounded in Ahmed’s model of emotion as social and cultural construct. The second paper will highlight the ways in which a school’s anti-bias stance can be the catalyst for the community’s emotional growth. In the third paper, the authors describe the ways in which infants, toddlers, and preschool age children manage their emotions and conflicts as they negotiate their ideas, as well as the ways in which teachers can support and encourage them. Lastly, the discussant will address the overall significance of the session offering constructive critical commentary and engaging the audience in dialogue.
