Educational Activism at AERA? Sites of Struggle and Possibility

Abstract

This session examines what can happen when educational researchers and activists attempt to create contested spaces in order to raise critical issues of social justice related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Three case studies will be presented and analyzed : (1) Protests at the 2007 AERA meeting concerning the changes to the NCATE professional standards on diversity ; (2) the 2009 AERA meeting at which one of the main conference hotels was both owned by one of the major supporters of the anti-gay bill Proposition 8 in California and was part of a broader labor dispute against Hyatt hotels; and (3) The 2013 meeting protests against the invited keynote address of Arne Duncan, Secretary of Education.
