Developing a Blueprint for a National Medical Licensing Examination Program: From Soup to Nuts

Abstract

Examinations are part and parcel of every stage of a medical professional’s training. Assessment, more generally, provides important information about a student’s progress throughout his or her education. In order to support valid generalizations from a specific examination to the underlying domains of interest it is critical that each test form adequately sample from these broader areas of interest in an identical fashion based on a test blueprint, i.e., a plan outlining the main content and skill areas to be assessed by any test form.

The goal of this symposium is to describe the process and sources of information that were integrated by a group of subject matter experts in arriving at a test blueprint for a large-scale medical licensing examination program.
