“Using the World as an Educational Laboratory”: Merging Educational Effectiveness Research and International Comparative Studies

Abstract
The overall purpose of the session is to revisit the idea of ‘using the world as an educational laboratory’. The newly available data from international trend studies with a longitudinal component on system level provide the opportunity to study change in student achievement across countries. The symposium aims to explore how this data can be used for educational effectiveness studies. It consolidates five presentations that demonstrate unique advantages of cross-country analyses for educational effectiveness research. The introductory presentation will review the development of international comparative studies and educational effectiveness research from an historical perspective. Thereafter, four interdisciplinary presentations estimate the effects of different features of educational systems on student achievement using data from PIRLS, PISA, and TIMSS.
