Session Type: Symposium
From a legislative perspective, the Republic of South Africa is a world leader in support for LGBT rights, but research has revealed the sharp contrast between the protection of sexual diversity at the legislative level and the lived experienced of sexual minorities in South African society. The papers presented in this symposium focus on teaching and sexual diversity in South African schools, where sexual diversity falls under the remit of the subject area Life Orientation (LO), a mandatory subject in late primary and all of secondary school. Our objectives are to understand the experiences of queer people, examine the state of the art of teaching about sexual diversity, and explore ways in which these practices might be improved.
