Division H Vice-Presidential Invited Session: Taking Stock of America’s Teacher Evaluation Tempest

Abstract

This interactive symposium will be initiated by presentations from three former AERA presidents, all of whom have devoted much of their careers to the analysis of teachers’ instruction. Each of these commentators will take a distinctive look at what’s currently happening in U.S. teacher evaluation, particularly the impact of in-place and developing teacher-appraisal programs on teachers and, more importantly, on students. Based on the presenters' analyses of what’s transpiring in U.S. teacher evaluations up through the spring of 2013, they will offer conclusions about errors to avoid and corrections to make. Two seasoned state-level discussants will react to the presenters' views, followed by small-group discussions and, later, a total-group discussion. A prominent national journalist will moderate.
