Abstract

This interactive symposium has two interlocking purposes: (a) to bring theoretical and empirical clarity to the notion of academic literacies, particularly as it pertains to adolescent English Language Learners (ELLs); and (b) to offer original analyses that use an academic literacies lens to provide situated perspectives on the teaching and learning of ELLs. The session brings together scholars from different academic institutions whose work draws on divergent methodologies. The papers share a theoretical grounding in academic literacies, and a common focus on adolescent ELLs. The session aims to provide the audience with an opportunity to collaboratively examine and apply an academic literacies framework for the exploration of the teaching and learning of ELLs in schools.
