Session Submission Summary

Validity and Fairness Issues in Assessing Second-Language Test-Takers

Fri, April 4, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 118C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Because of globalization and other macro-level forces, test-taking populations are becoming increasingly diverse across a number of key individual characteristics. Given these accelerating trends, it is critical to evaluate whether the assessments we use are valid and fair for all test-takers. This symposium focuses specifically on validity and fairness issues that arise from assessing students who are taking an assessment in a language other than their first or native language. This situation occurs when students are required to take an assessment of language proficiency, content knowledge, or for cross-national comparisons. The presenters in this symposium are from institutions in several different countries; the discussant has been engaged for 25 years in validity research for a variety of test-taker populations.
