Transcendence and Education

Abstract

The papers rely primarily on “American” philosophy (pragmatism and transcendentalism), Continental philosophy, and post-structuralism to explore transcendence in education. The first paper, “How Could There Be an Education in Transcendence?” relies on Martin Heidegger, Alain Badiou, and Georg Lukács, to suggest that there is no place in the world of education for the transcendence of wisdom. The second paper, “Some Pragmatic Preferences for Educational Transcendence” investigates transcendence as intrinsic to education. The third contribution, “Crisis and rebirth: Stanley Cavell and American Transcendentalism,” seeks a deeper sense of critical thinking in the tradition of the American transcendentalists. The last paper, “Transcendence down: Pragmatism’s Eastern Strains and Poststructuralism,” explores Eastern strains of pragmatism, post-structuralism, and American transcendentalism.
