Abstract

Leading a student-run academic journal during doctoral education holds great rewards and numerous challenges for graduate students. This symposium presents the editorial teams from four student-run academic journals – Perspectives on Urban Education, The Berkeley Review of Education, Higher Education in Review, and Working Papers in Educational Linguistics- to share their experiences and insight on creating, sustaining, and enriching a journal during graduate school. We examine four intersecting issues: training graduate student reviewers, developing organizational structures that support the production cycle, balancing mentorship experiences with quality and rigor, and maintaining an online presence. Senior scholar and editor Nancy Hornberger will respond to the presentations, as well as facilitate a final discussion across all four editorial teams.
