Session Type: Structured Poster Session
The CBAL (Cognitively-Based Assessments of, for and as Learning) research initiative at Educational Testing Service represents one of the few examples of an attempt to explicitly integrate cognitive science with assessment. Generally following the principles of Evidence-Centered Design, this initiative has developed all the major pieces of a large-scale assessment system in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and is currently being expanded to cover Science as well. In the course of this effort, the CBAL research staff has had to confront nearly all the issues that arise when cognitive science is used to inform assessment. This structured poster session will provide an update on how the CBAL research initiative is addressing these issues in the English Language Arts.
