Session Type: Roundtable Session
Films are a ubiquitous feature of contemporary life. Within the educational research community we have only begun to explore the potential for conversations about the consequences and promises of film on the landscape of educational policy and practice. This symposium draws together scholars and educators from a variety of backgrounds to explore educational questions raised in popular movies and documentaries, including The First Year (2001), Waiting for Superman (2010), Precious Knowledge (2011), Kings of Pastry (2009), and Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993). The five presentations offer helpful analytic tools, interpretations, and uses of these films to illustrate how they can enrich our understanding of the cultural contexts in which learning, teaching, and schooling take shape.
