Testimonio as Curriculum and Pedagogy: Toward an Understanding of Hispanophone Cultural and Educational Traditions

Abstract
This session explores the curricular and pedagogical potentials of one Hispanophone tradition: testimonio. This session provides an historical overview of the testimonio tradition along with contemporary deployments in the genre. Additionally, this session explores on-going issues within the testimonio tradition with an emphasis on testimonio’s problematic and often privileged interlocutors on behalf of oppressed or marginalized voices. Finally, this panel performs testimonio in autobiographical and ethno-poiesis exploring and theorizing testimonio’s curricular and pedagogical uses in classrooms with Latino students. Overall, this panel introduces the testimonio tradition to curriculum and pedagogy thereby advancing an important dimension of Hispanophone curriculum.
