Abstract

Performance assessment is becoming increasingly popular, due primarily to the focus of the Common Core State Standards on complex reasoning and other higher-order thinking skills. However, scoring of these more open-ended assessment approaches is costly and time-consuming, producing less reliable scores than more constrained assessment approaches. This session will explore recent research on challenges and methods of performance scoring. Presenters will share papers that examine technical issues associated with scoring a range of performance types, including responses to performance tasks, concept maps, videotaped demonstrations, projects, and online games. The goal of the session is to illuminate current challenges around performance scoring and explore techniques for addressing these challenges.
