Everyday Scenes and Affective Intensities

Abstract

This symposium examines “hot spots” of everyday life in the present--the It Gets Better campaign, celebrations of the history of gay activism, the hyper-visibility of Muslim youth in U.S. classrooms, and teachers’ talk about LGBTQ issues in schools—for their affective intensities, forces, and multiplicities. The presenters are influenced by Deleuzian non-representational theory, feminist cultural studies of affect, and queer theory. Highlighting non-normative affects, such as, feeling backward and feeling unhappy, the presenters prioritize events that refuse reduction to normative constructs and hierarchies. The presenters seek openings for non-reductive research around youth, sexuality, and pedagogies, which might imagine new mobilities and connections.
