Session Type: Symposium
The studies in this symposium employ a variety of research designs, methods and theoretical perspectives to examine bilingual writing development and practices among Spanish-English emergent bilinguals in dual language and bilingual programs in the U.S. Research on writing development and instruction for children receiving instruction in two languages is scarce. This lack of empirical evidence impacts the educational opportunities available for the growing number of emergent bilingual children in U.S. public schools. The emphasis on academic writing in the Common Core State Standards makes it a particularly important research domain. Findings from these studies will shed light on the various language functions, skills, attitudes, and instructional practices that impact children’s biliteracy development within specific social contexts and age groups.
