From No Child Left Behind to Common Core: How Do New Standards Affect Practices and Policies for English Learners?

Abstract
The implementation of new standards, such as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and other state standards, require that all teachers and learners meet complex intellectual and language demands, and yet many questions remain regarding how the practices and policies that emerge from these new standards affect English learners (ELs). In this session, presenters examine the implications of a new era of high stakes standards for the teaching and learning of linguistically and culturally diverse students. The studies in this session shed light on the impact of standards in both bilingual and ESL settings, and in states that both have and have not adopted CCSS. This session has implications for teaching practices, student learning, and language education policies.
