Research Evidence on the Dynamic and Cyclical Nature of Self-Regulated Learning

Abstract

This symposium presents research demonstrating the ways in which self-regulated learners of various ages and disciplines adapt and change after receiving feedback. As chair, a self-regulated learning (SRL) expert, Dr. Héfer Bembenutty, will present an overview of the cycle of the three SRL phases. A distinguished panel of international speakers will present research on how teachers adapted their instruction over two cycles; how college level teacher education candidates’ use of SRL processes changed based on the learning context; how young musicians followed until early adulthood sustained motivation, cognition, affect, and behaviors to reach goals; how high school girls’ SRL for studying science changed over the course of their senior year, and how eighth grade students used goal setting, planning, strategy use, monitoring, attributions, and adaptive inferences to solve math word problems. Presenters will be followed by renowned scholar Dr. Dale H. Schunk’s discussion of educational implications, then questions from attendees.
