Asian/American Women Navigating Academia: Challenges, Opportunities, and New Perspectives

Abstract

This symposium session brings together five Asian/American women housed in colleges/schools of education with varied experience as faculty administrators (deans and department chairs), faculty members, and scholars. Each of us reflects on the challenges and realities of “finding our place” in the academy by theorizing our experiences and scholarship from a variety of approaches and interpretive frameworks. We will engage the audience in critical discussion about the need for reconceptualizing and redefining leadership, scholarship, and success from an Asian Americanist feminist perspective (Hune, 2011) that challenges white feminist frameworks that too often ignore the complexities of our racialized experiences while also considering how additional factors such as class, ethnicity/nationality, language, and sexual orientation differently shape our identities and outlooks in relation to our work (Madden, 2005; Schwartz, 1997).
