Session Type: Symposium
This symposium presents studies of how immigrant and indigenous students, with families, schools, communities, and universities, support pathways through the academic pipeline from preschool through graduate school (P-20). Drawing on Bridging Multiple Worlds, sociocultural (Vygotsky, 1978), Freirean (Freire, 1983), and funds of knowledge (Moll, 1992) theories, this symposium illuminates how cultural partnerships among students, parents, and educators, working through community organizations, schools, and universities advance innovative cycles of research, practice, and policies. We focus on Hawai‘i and California, where presenters have longstanding cultural partnerships with families, schools, community organizations, and universities, and highlight differences and similarities from experiences of Minority-Serving Institutions in these two states. Together, the papers illuminate resources and challenges for partnerships enhancing diversity and equity in education.
