Digital Literacies and Mobility in Migrant Communities: Studying Youth Practices and Learning Across Spaces

Abstract

New contexts of migration, mobility, and diffusion of digital media call for a re-evaluation of our understanding of how people engage in communicative practices and what it means to learn and be literate. This session brings together four projects that work with immigrant youth and children in three national contexts to study the new media practices and learning resources of the young people as they move across home, school, community, and online social networks that cross national boundaries. Together, these studies provide a complex portrait of the digital and communicative repertoires of young people from migrant communities, and offer implications for how educational designs can leverage the digital and cultural assets of the youth in institutional learning spaces.
