Session Type: Symposium
This symposium presents findings from studies on literary reasoning in middle and high schools from Project READI, a multi-institutional project funded by IES’s Reading for Understanding Initiative. It focuses on the discipline of literary interpretation. Five presentations address the theoretical framing that underlies the design of interventions (focusing on text complexity, use of students’ cultural knowledge, process strategies for literary comprehension, and support for argumentation), the development of tools (pre-post assessments, epistemology survey and discourse analytic tools) to assess the impact of the interventions, and some of the initial results of interventions in terms of the structure of student reasoning and how change in literary reasoning over time was influenced by processes entailed in the architecture of the intervention.
