Session Type: Symposium
This symposium focuses on tensions in a global mentoring network composed of women academics in countries such as Egypt, Trinidad, Australia, Canada, and the United States. The elasticity of the overall global network allows for expansion and contraction. The elasticity and the reorganization into mentoring circles via technospaces (Knouse, 2001) surfaced tensions related to collaborating across power dynamics, engaging in difficult dialogues, and pushing the boundaries of our epistemological stances. To understand the power of a mentoring network to benefit women in academia, this symposium will address how its participants work through tensions (West, 2004). This symposium is concerned with the possibility that tension, worked through, can be harnessed to serve as a productive rather than destructive force.
