Popular Media Culture, Hip-Hop, and Mexican Corridos: Honoring Young People’s Multiple Literacies

Abstract

In this symposium, women scholar-activists and researchers at the Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME), a research institute with over forty years of history situated in Harlem, New York City, will present their action-research findings on social justice teaching, critical and digital literacy development, and the use of popular media culture in education. Drawing from their experiences as current high school teachers and community organizers, their presentations will raise fundamental questions about the intersections of English Education, Critical Media Literacy, and Critical Pedagogy by and for historically marginalized peoples. This session will culminate in a dialogue, mediated by two well-known scholars and community activists on the future of literacy pedagogy and research.
