Session Type: Roundtable Session
The symposium deals with transitions and trajectories within a selective schooling system. Selective in this context means students in education systems like ones in Germany or Austria have to decide after four years of comprehensive primary school whether to follow an academic track or a vocational track. The decision means attending separate schools. “Theoretically, the performance of students governs their allocation to the different types of secondary school; however, in practice there are massive social and regional aspects involved in this allocation” (Geppert, Bauer-Hofmann & Hopmann, 2012, p. 14).
A school reform in the stage of Secondary One, where a new kind of comprehensive school was implemented, makes it even more important to focus on aspects within educational transitions and ask how “smooth educational” transitions can be implemented.
