Session Type: Symposium
Papers in this session describe four programs of educational research that use auto-photography. Presenters will illustrate how they paired auto-photography with other methods, such as photo-elicited interviews, focus groups, and critical discourse analysis, to study issues of identity, efficacy, marginalization and self-determination in young children and marginalized youth. Also they will explain what new and nuanced understandings these methods revealed about the people and research problems they were studying. These studies offer evidence of how participatory methods and visual data can reverse the usual research. relationship, whereby researchers impose meaning on their data, and potentially represent participants’ experiences better, resulting in the generation of new, more accurate, and more complete knowledge
