Abstract

Although states and school districts are placing more and more emphasis on evaluating K-12 teachers, practitioners and researchers lack clear standards and cost-effective measures for gathering valid and reliable data about teachers’ instruction. In this symposium, presenters share findings from diverse projects measuring K-12 teachers’ instruction, and they discuss how those findings can inform efforts to design and implement rigorous and innovative methods that accurately capture teachers’ classroom practices. Such discussions are essential if we are to measure teaching well and understand how teaching influences what students learn, and they might also contribute to district and school administrators’ efforts to assess teachers’ instruction and help teachers improve the effectiveness of their practices.
