Ethnography and Language in Educational Settings: (Re)Envisioning and Reformulating Language Use in Educational Settings

Sat, April 5, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Session Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract

Green and Wallat’s seminal book Ethnography and Language in Educational Settings (1981) provides “new approaches to ethnographic analysis of social interaction in educational settings” (ix). Now, four decades later, ethnographic studies in education that focus on language-in-use have become ubiquitous; however, contextual factors (e.g., sociocultural, economic and political) that influence what can be known through ethnographic research vary greatly and challenge researchers to become more transparent in their approach. The diverse group of scholars in this session make visible assumptions that underlie their ethnographic traditions and present studies that demonstrate rich affordances of ethnography to examine language-in-use across traditions, within traditions, and to address issues in critical areas, such as biliteracy and LGBT.
