Evaluation of Reading Apprenticeship Improving Secondary Education

Abstract

This session presents the multi-layered evaluation of the Reading Apprenticeship (RA) professional development and current research of its effects on teacher practice and student achievement. RA is a model of academic literacy instruction designed to improve literacy skills and academic achievement for all students. The session begins with an introduction from the program directors of the Reading Apprenticeship Improving Secondary Education (RAISE) initiative which began with a 2010 i3 validation grant to scale up and validate RA. Researchers from both the randomized control trial validating the study and the formative scale-up study will present separately. In addition, the evaluation team from a 2012 i3 development grant will present the Internet-based Reading Apprenticeship Improving Science Education (iRAISE) study.
