Session Type: Symposium
The purpose of this symposium is to offer documentation of young people’s dynamic language and literacy practices to challenge and expand how literacy is conceived in school spaces and how these processes speak to curricular projects. We draw upon five different inquiries -- ranging from pre-school classrooms to high school -- to explore the tensions and possibilities of how teachers and students might work through constraints to support multiple language and literacy practices. We present examples of expansive and multimodal literacy practices and curricula that build on young people’s strengths and experiences and offer space for innovation and change.
