The Spatial Search to Understand and Address Educational Inequity to Inform Praxis

Abstract

Spatial analysis is a powerful tool in understanding and addressing educational inequity. Soja (2010) notes, “Interpreting…through a critical spatial perspective and its wide-ranging geographical imagination adds significant insight and understanding to conventional commentaries” (p. 35). This session explores case studies applying critical spatial analysis to educational equity research. The panel’s intent is to engage in discussion about the use of critical spatial methodologies in educational research, particularly research centered on social justice. We draw together researchers who focus their work at different scales, across varied fields, and over a range of time periods in order to present the possibilities of new methodologies that allow for dynamic and creative solutions to address inequity and work towards social justice.
