Session Submission Summary

Mindfulness-Based Approaches for Supporting Teachers’ Social and Emotional Skills and Dispositions

Fri, April 4, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, 415

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Teachers play a critical role in their students’ social and emotional learning by creating and maintaining supportive relationships with their students and classroom environments that are conducive to learning. Educators must manage their own daily stressors and emotional experience in order to support their students’ social and emotional learning and provide effective instruction. When teachers lack the resources to effectively manage stress, the classroom climate can deteriorate. However, with training in emotional skills, self-reflection and mindfulness-based techniques, teachers may be able to reduce their stress levels, improve the effectiveness of their teaching and the implementation of social-emotional learning programs. The proposed symposium will present research on three interventions designed to promote supporting teachers’ social and emotional skills and dispositions.
